MDA to Host Open House Meetings to Discuss Environmental Impact Statement for Long Range Discrimination Radar

May 24, 2019

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA), in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration and U. S. Air Force, is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to inform a decision on the design of Special Use Airspace (SUA) necessary for the operation of Long Range Discrimination Radar at Clear Air Force Station in Alaska.

The 2014 National Defense Authorization Act required MDA to deploy a U.S. based radar with sufficient capability for midcourse Ballistic Missile Defense System discrimination and hit/kill assessment in support of enhanced homeland defense.

Operation of this radar with an expanded SUA requires MDA to prepare an EIS in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969. As part of the NEPA process, the public has the opportunity to review and< comment on proposed actions, alternatives, and the environmental analysis.

The public, as well as federal, state and local agencies and Alaska Native Tribes are invited to be involved in the scoping process for the preparation of this EIS by participating in a scoping meeting or submitting written comments. MDA will host three meetings as part of the public scoping process to identify and determine potential environmental impacts as well as to document key issues of concern to be analyzed in the EIS.

The open house meetings will take place on June 4-6, 2019 at Anchorage, Anderson, and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Project information and meeting materials are available here. The public can use the website for project information and to submit comments. The formal comment period is May 17-July 5, 2019. Comments can be emailed to info@cleareis.com.
